K2 Expedition Pakistan | 8,611m Summit Climb & Base Camp Trek

Details

A K2 expedition is not a trek with a view of a big mountain, it is a full high-altitude mountaineering climb, and this page lays out exactly what that involves. The route from Islamabad to the summit, the day-by-day itinerary, real distances and elevations, the best climbing season, what's included, and the safety standards behind the team leading you there. At 8,611 meters (28,251 feet), K2 is the second-highest mountain on Earth and the most demanding of the 8,000-meter peaks. Known worldwide as the “Savage Mountain,” it sits on the Pakistan-China border in the Karakoram Range and carries a summit success rate far lower and a fatality rate far higher than Everest.

Officially named Mount Godwin-Austen, K2 takes its more common name from its Karakoram survey designation. Its steep, pyramid-shaped rock and ice faces, combined with brutally unpredictable weather, meant it wasn't summited until 1954 decades after Everest was first attempted. That difficulty is exactly what continues to draw serious mountaineers to it today.

K2 Expedition Route Overview

Every K2 expedition follows the same corridor through Gilgit-Baltistan, and understanding it stage by stage helps you know exactly what you're signing up for.

The journey begins in Islamabad, with a flight or overland drive via Chilas to Skardu, the last major town before the mountains. From Skardu, a rough jeep track leads to Askole, the final village with road access everything beyond this point is on foot, across moraine and glacier, for the remainder of the expedition.

From Askole, the trek to K2 base camp runs through a sequence of camps Julla, Paiyu, Khuburse, Urdukas, and Goro before reaching Concordia, where the Baltoro Glacier meets the Godwin-Austen Glacier and K2 comes into full view for the first time. From Concordia, a short final push leads to K2 base camp itself, at roughly 5,150 meters the staging point for the climb above.

Above base camp, climbers move through a series of high camps toward the summit, using fixed ropes and rotational acclimatization climbs before the final summit push. The descent typically exits via the technical Gondogoro La pass (5,680m) into the Hushe Valley, rather than retracing the full walk-in a route choice that shortens the return and offers a dramatically different perspective of the Karakoram on the way out.

Distances and Elevation Along the Route

Understanding the elevation of K2 base camp and how gradually the route climbs toward it explains why acclimatization days are built in rather than optional:

Location Approx. Elevation
Askole 3,000–3,050m
Julla 3,500m
Paiyu 3,666m
Urdukas 4,100m
Goro 4,300m
Concordia 4,600m
K2 Base Camp 5,150m
Gondogoro La 5,680m
K2 Summit 8,611m

The Askole to K2 base camp distance runs approximately 90 kilometers one way, while the Concordia to K2 base camp distance covers the final 9 kilometers of that approach. From K2 base camp, the distance to the summit is a vertical gain of over 3,400 meters a climb that bears no resemblance to the trekking stages below it and is reserved for expedition members with prior high-altitude mountaineering experience.

Advanced Base Camp and the Summit Push

Above K2 base camp, climbers establish advanced base camp and a series of higher camps (commonly Camps 1 through 4) along established climbing routes such as the Abruzzi Spur. Each rotation between these camps serves a purpose: carrying gear, fixing rope, and critically allowing the body to acclimatize to progressively thinner air before the final push.

The summit push itself typically launches from the highest camp during a narrow weather window identified by the expedition's meteorological forecasting, often in the pre-dawn hours to allow a return to camp before afternoon weather deterioration a standard, non-negotiable safety practice on K2, where conditions can shift with little warning.

Best Time for a K2 Expedition

The climbing season for K2 runs from late June through early August, aligning with the narrow summer weather window in the Karakoram. Outside this period, high camps become inaccessible and avalanche risk rises sharply. Even within the season, summit weather windows on K2 are notoriously narrow and unpredictable compared to Everest, which is exactly why realistic itineraries build in multiple contingency days rather than a fixed summit date.

Your Team: Guides, Safety, and Experience

This expedition is led by Arif Hassan Sadpara, CEO of Hassan Sadpara Treks & Tours and the Hassan Sadpara Mountain Rescue Club of Pakistan. Arif is the son of the late Muhammad Hassan Sadpara, Pakistan's pioneering high-altitude mountaineer, known for summiting the world's highest peaks without supplemental oxygen. Arif has continued that legacy, guiding and organizing expeditions across the Karakoram and Himalaya, including multiple K2 and Broad Peak campaigns.

Our climbing Sherpas and high-altitude staff are assigned on a one-to-one basis per member, and our guides carry direct, firsthand knowledge of route conditions, weather patterns, and safety protocols specific to K2 not generalized high-altitude experience applied to a mountain they don't know well.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a full K2 expedition take?

A complete K2 expedition, from arrival in Islamabad to departure, typically takes 60 to 65 days, including trek-in time, acclimatization rotations, weather contingency days, and the trek out via Gondogoro La.

What is the elevation of K2 base camp?

K2 base camp sits at approximately 5,150 meters (16,900 feet), reached after a roughly 90-kilometer trek from Askole through Concordia.

What is the distance from K2 base camp to the summit?

The vertical distance from K2 base camp to the summit is over 3,400 meters, covered through a series of high camps and acclimatization rotations rather than in a single push.

When is the best time for a K2 expedition?

The climbing window runs from late June through early August, when the Karakoram's summer weather offers the most viable — though still narrow and unpredictable — summit opportunities.

Do I trek out the same way I came in?

No. Most K2 expeditions descend from base camp to Concordia and then exit via the Gondogoro La pass into the Hushe Valley, rather than retracing the inbound route through Askole.

Is prior mountaineering experience required?

Yes. While the trek to K2 base camp is achievable for very fit, experienced high-altitude trekkers, the climb above base camp requires prior technical mountaineering and high-altitude experience — this is not an entry-level 8,000-meter objective.
